Ultimate Fishing Vacation | Sport Fishing in Mozambique
The Ultimate Fishing Vacation begins with the Mozambique coastline which offers some of the most spectacular sport fishing in the world. Here, the Indian Ocean is an untouched marine reserve, unspoiled and unexplored, making it an ideal destination for a luxury fishing vacation.
With its deep Mozambique Channel fed by the strong north to south Mozambican current, the coastline harbors some of the most exciting game and bill fish. Angler’s can fish species such as black, blue and striped marlin, sailfish, shortbill spearfish, wahoo, dorado, various tuna species, king and queen mackerel, kingfish, queenfish, barracuda and snappers. They are all found here, thus is why Mozambique is the Ultimate Fishing Vacation!

No matter whether you’re a recreational or specialist, fishermen looking for a unique fishing vacation are increasingly attracted to Mozambique’s sport fishing destinations – the Bazaruto and Quirimbas Archipelagos. Anglers try their luck with these legendary species that have made this region in southern Africa AND the world famous.
Fast becoming one of the preferred fly-fishing destinations in southern Africa the Bazaruto Archipelago is becoming a recognized name to many anglers. To the novice, hobbyist and professional, this region of Mozambique tops the lists of fishing vacation destinations.
With numerous mid-range to 5 star lodges on offer, the angler has an established base from which to set off in search for trophy fish. Daily flights from Johannesburg, South Africa to Vilankulos (Bazaruto Archipelago) make this a very accessible fishery.
Fishing Vacation at Bazaruto Archipelago
The Bazaruto Archipelago has been considered one of East Africa’s best, and certainly Mozambique’s, premier fishing vacation destinations since the late 1950’s. During these early days these pioneer anglers fishing from Santa Carolina (Paradise) Island came across a healthy population of giant black marlin in a sea teeming with hundreds of other species.
Still, to this day the Bazaruto Archipelago is the only place in Africa to have produced record breaking black marlin – in excess of 1,000+ pounds. The current record caught off the northern tip of Bazaruto Island in November 1998 weighed in at a whopping 1,298 pounds!

Recently, anglers from around the world have discovered the Bazaruto waters hold much more than the giant black marlin, which migrates through the waters during Mozambique’s summer months (November – March).
The area is also home to an amazing winter run of sailfish, a great variety of offshore species such as wahoo, dorado, king mackererl, and tuna to name a few. Anglers on a fishing vacation can also expect a great diversity of inshore species on the leeward side of the islands making it ideal for fly fishermen.
Fishing Vacation at Quirimbas Archipelago
For anglers looking for truly unexplored fishing grounds, look no further than Pemba and the Quirimbas Archipelago. Pioneering anglers have long known of its treasures and potential. It is only recently where recreational anglers are following the pioneers in their footsteps. Most of what was known about fishing these waters were limited to the secrets of these pioneers and it is only now that this unspoiled region is being explored.
The waters here are rich in diversity with healthy populations. With such great potential and so much game fish in the area, it’s only beginning to show its true colors as an established world-class fishing vacation destination.

The warm tropical waters offer coral reefs rich in rare and beautiful vegetation and marine species. Snorkeling and scuba diving are also a popular activity for group or family members who do and do not fish.
The islands are also home to a variety of wildlife, a vast array of bird species and at least have 5 species of sea turtles that breed on the island.
Mozambique makes for a great destination to include on your African wildlife safari. Combine an itinerary with one week of safari in South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, or Zimbabwe and spend one week on the white sand beaches of tropical Mozambique on a world-class fishing vacation.
