Gorongosa National Park Safaris

Gorongosa National Park safaris are on the rebound. Once an outstanding game viewing destination, today travelers from across the globe are beginning to return. Before the onset of Mozambique’s civil war in the 1970’s, Gorongosa National Park safaris were considered one of Africa’s finest, with large populations of antelopes and predators. However Goronogosa National Park safaris took a huge down turn as the wildlife populations were largely affected by the troubles of Mozambique’s political atrocities. It is only in recent years that a restoration project has been implemented in efforts to re-establish the park and its game viewing.

The Carr Foundation, a US not-for-profit organization, has teamed up with the Government of Mozambique to protect and restore the ecosystem of the National Park and to develop an ecotourism industry to benefit the surrounding local communities. As a result Gorongosa National Park safaris are once again becoming a popular choice for outstanding game viewing destinations.

Gorongosa National Park Safaris: Wildlife and Conservation

The rehabilitation of the park is still in its early days and game viewing on Gorongosa National Park safaris lacks diversity. With that being said, each and every year new species are being added to the park including big predators. It’s already an interesting park as it is well off the beaten safari path and is perfect for travelers looking for a great wilderness experience.

What kind of animals can you expect to see on Gorongosa National Park safaris?

The park is home to healthy populations of oribi, reedbuck, waterbuck, warthog and sable. Predator populations are recovering slowly with several prides of lion. Elephant herds are a regular encounter.

Buffalo, wildebeest, kudu and hartebeest are being reintroduced to the park but their numbers are still low. Leopards occur but like elsewhere are extremely elusive. In the parks rivers and lake, hippo and crocodile thrive on the floodplains where zebra, impala and baboons are consistently seen.

Gorongosa National Park safaris are particularly well suited for birders. Home to unique and endemic birds such as the collared palm thrush, the green coucal, narina trogon and spotted creeper.

The ecosystems at Gorongosa are diverse, with the savannahs dotted with acacia, dry forests and sandy areas, wetlands or pans that are seasonally filled by the rains, and thickets on towering termite-built mounds. Rainforests also can be found at the bottom of a series of limestone gorges. These environments all make Gorongosa National Park safaris highly unique.
