Epupa Falls

Epupa is the Herero word meaning ‘falling waters.’ The falls are located in Namibia’s far northwestern corner, 190 km from Opuwo. The drive can be made with 2WD vehicles but during the rainy season it may prove to be difficult. In which case a 4WD would be better suited to the conditions.

Until the early 1990s, with the arrival of tourism, Epupa Falls was Namibia’s best kept secret. The Kunene River, meandering from Ruacana Falls 145 km to the east, creates the border between Namibia and Angola, and is home to the nomadic Himba peoples and their livestock. The river winds through forests of makalani which line the river, on both sides, in a green stripe, characteristically different than the surrounding dry, arid hillsides that are parched by the conditions.

As the river winds through the Baynes Mountains, it widens into formed islands before taking the deep plunge into a chasm caused by a geological fault. Here, Epupa Falls plunges more than 60 m over a distance of 1.5 km, forming a series of cascades and dividing into channels of which the water consistently falls throughout the year (with its peak flow during the months of April and May).

The place is enchanting, with large baobabs, wild figs, and makalani palms growing around the oasis. It is a relaxing environment surrounded by the constant hum of the falls and the melodies of birds. The pools around the falls make for excellent swimming. Do, however, use caution as the current can easily sweep you down into the abyss. There are also trails leading west, away from the falls, which make for beautiful views. They continue down the river, to hidden beaches and splendid lookouts.

Getting There

If you decide to hire your own car for travel, it’s best to have a high clearance 4WD vehicle especially during the rainy season. The village of Okongwati is 105 km towards the falls and offers small shops selling basic canned foods and cool drinks. Shortly after you pass the town you cross the Okongwati River, which is dry most of the season and a 2WD vehicle will pass. However, during the rainy season a 4WD vehicle is necessary.

Birding

For serious birders, Epupa Falls is haven. You have the chance to spot the rare rufous-tailed palm thrush, rosy-faced lovebirds, paradise flycatchers, and African fish-eagles, several species of kingfisher, bee-eaters, bulbuls, hornbills, and rollers.

Accommodation

Epupa Falls is quickly being recognized as a tranquil environment and as a result the camps and lodges are beginning to offer luxury items for visitors. However, the best way to visit the falls is to bring your own supplies: food, water treatment tablets, cooking supplies, tent, and sleeping bags. Choosing to stay at the community campsite will both benefit the local people and keep the area pristine with low impact travel.
